Personality:

With Thanatos being the quite literal embodiment of death, there are certainly aspects of his personality that are not at all surprising. For instance, he comes across as rather sullen and distant, the general vibe around him is what you'd more or less expect from someone at a funeral. Likewise, he is rather serious about most things, and can be rather scathing in his solemnity towards others, especially if they take matters less seriously than he himself does. In fact, he can be downright prickly with people because of this, usually show casing this with people he cares about more than those he doesn't.

Despite this grim disposition, he is actually a lot less cold than he'd like others to believe. Being "gentle" death certainly shows through in his personality, because he is actually quite soft and sensitive in matters of the heart. This sensitively is shown mostly with Zagreus, whom of which he holds very strong romantic feelings for. When he caught wind of Zagreus trying to escape the Underworld from the others, and not Zagreus himself, he makes it very apparent once the two run into one another that he's gravely hurt by such negligence. Hurt that Zagreus didn't even so much as seek him out to tell him good-bye. Yet, despite the hurt, he still helps Zagreus, he just also uses it as a means to be passive aggressive and critical of what he's doing.

That's another thing about Thanatos, he is rather passive-aggressive about a lot of things. While being one to criticize others with sardonic quips and the like, he isn't exactly one for direct confrontation with those he cares about. Usually waiting till he's been pushed to a certain point of irritation, before berating and lecturing whomever has earned his ire. He does try to maintain an unapproachable and intimidating front, what with being death and all, yet those who know him are well aware of what that posturing is. Even as he lectures, it's out of love and worry for them and those their actions affect. Still, he can be pretty temperamental and moody, and when emotions get high, he has a tendency to get the last word before teleporting away before anything else can be said.

His emotions seem to climb pretty quickly when disagreements happen, and while he is one to come back and apologize, he can say some rather coruscating remarks before that. Really, the problem is he tends to care a little too much, and so it's hard for him to rein in those feelings, but once he's able to have time to cool off, he's then capable to act a bit more rationally. He is a god that favors rational and calculated decisions, yet so easily can he be pushed to act irrationally because of his sensitivity and irritability. Perhaps his favoring strictness and orderliness is to overcompensate for his tendency to get emotional? Either way, his propensity to get upset and quickly really damages his scary death god appearance, and fortunately is reserved for those who have access to his heart.

All in all, he's a sensitive man, one prone to sentimentality, and who cares a lot for those he holds near and dear. Despite having said he sometimes prefers when he didn't feel anything at all, he has a lot of love to give and clearly wants to give it. Being loyal to a fault to those he respects and loves as well. Even showing that he will stand against Lord Hades as he continues to help Zagreus despite knowing he could face some horrible consequences for such mutinous actions. This doesn't go without him nagging Zagreus about it, however, yet still he acts in accordance to his loyalty and feelings for Zagreus regardless of the personal dangers. Really, it's only around Zagreus and Megaera (a coworker and friend of his) that he seems capable of letting loose and being playful, even smile and laugh a little. Truly a treat for those worthy of seeing it.

Thanatos' grim exterior truly serves as a mask to hide the sensitive and lonely man who cares a little too much about everything underneath. Yet, once he grows close to someone, that facade chips away, even if each chip can have a little emotional blow up as he tries to sort his feelings. Even if his affections can come with some thorns at times, he does mean well, and wants what's best for everyone—but especially those most dear to him.

Needless to say, this is different than his first appearance in this realm. For starters, he is in a bedroom that he does not recognize, being confronted by a woman he likewise does not know, utterly bereft of anything that would mark him for the Chthonic deity he is—was? Truly unexplainable, that not only would he be brought to this world as a captive, but so too would he be robbed of his strength, his scythe, his—well, not everything, he still is wearing his godly attire. Yet, without his powers he felt far more exposed than if he were as nude as the day he sprang forth into existence with Hypnos from their mother Nyx.

The exchange with the woman, the ushering out of the house, all of it went by so quickly, and was about as equally bizarre. As if some mere mortal woman could be the mother of death himself—utterly absurd! Yet, far was it from the only thing thus. Admittedly, and perhaps a touch embarrassingly, it had long since been a while since he's had to rely on walking like some pitiful mortal, having long since overly relied upon his ability to levitate everywhere. Hell, he would teleport to make up the difference, and while he could often be seen looming over the River Styx within the House of Hades, that was far from waltzing around as his only mode of transportation.

All of that is to say that he feels like a fish out of water walking around with the full weight of his body upon his bare feet, among everything else that he has to confront. Like the small wisp of a wretch that seems to be his partner of sorts? Honestly, the spirit looks like a small mockery of his own aesthetics, and maybe he'd be more bothered if he wasn't busy being distracted by everything else about his situation.

Like the chill in the air, and how half of his chest being exposed, not to mention his upper arms and feet, do little to help the matter. It isn't that he couldn't feel temperatures as a god, but more rather they were meaningless noise for his existence, than something that could be a potential problem.

"Well, I suppose there is little to be done about this situation, hm?" He finally speaks, eyeing the Duskull with a scrutinizing hard stare, the frown upon his face being no more friendly. However, the little grim reaper doesn't seem bothered, and instead floats around idly, eyeing him curiously with its singular red iris through one eye socket, then the other as it tilts this way and that.

With a sigh, Thanatos decides to investigate the backpack that was forced upon him, and to his relief there does seem to be clothing that might make up for the exposure his current outfit affords him. Still, this is less than desirable, but one cannot simply sit around and be upset with their lot. If he is somehow mortal now, then he must act in accordance to their fragile existences—he supposes he has an advantage being death and all. He certainly knows how to avoid himself, though he cannot help but be darkly amused at the idea of death dying.
